Why The Kapre?

Why The Kapre?

In Filipino folklore, the Kapre is a towering, cigar-smoking forest spirit said to live in ancient trees, watching over the land and the people who wander beneath its branches. He is playful, mysterious, and a little mischievous — a guardian of hidden places where stories are shared, laughter runs late into the night, and strangers often leave as friends. This sense of wonder and warmth is what inspired the heart of The Kapre Restobar, a place built around the idea that a great meal should feel like you’ve stepped into a story, not simply sat down at a table, and if anyone asks the question: “Where to eat in Panglao?” – we hope you’ll agree that, that is with us at The Kapre RestoBar.

The Balete tree at our centre is more than a backdrop; it is the soul of the space, and it is surely unique dining in Panglao. In local legend, these trees are gathering points for spirits and storytellers alike, and at Kapre, they become a natural meeting place for families, travellers, and locals. Beneath its branches, fire meets flavour, drinks meet music, and the rhythm of Panglao life flows freely from day into night. The setting invites guests to slow down, look up, and soak in a dining experience that feels grounded in culture, community, a touch of the unexpected, and hopefully the best BBQ in Bohol.

Choosing the name Kapre is our way of honouring Filipino imagination and hospitality in equal measure. The Kapre is known as a friendly trickster rather than a threat — a host who enjoys company and thrives on shared moments. That spirit lives in every corner of our restobar, from the warmth of the welcome to the energy around the grills and the bar. It’s an inviting symbol of connection, curiosity, and good times, making The Kapre not just a place to eat and drink, but a place to gather, celebrate, and create stories of your own at the best restaurant in Panglao,
